Youth is not a time of life－it is a state of mind.

It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees.

It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions.

It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

 

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.

This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of the 20.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.

 

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give enthusiasm wrinkle the soul.

Worry, Doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair－these are the long,

long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

 

Whether 60 or 16, there is every human being's heart the lure of wonder,

the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living.

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

 

so long as it receive massages of beauty, hope, cheer,

courage and power from men from the infinite, so long are you young.

When aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with

snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism,

then you are grown old, even at 20.

 

But as long as your aerials are up, to each waves of optimism,

there is hope you may die young at 80.

 

 

청춘이란 인생의 어느 기간을 말하는 것이 아니라

마음의 상태를 말한다.

 

그것은 장미빛 뺨, 앵두같은 입술, 하늘거리는 자태가 아니라

강한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타는 열정을 말한다.

 

청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘물에서 오는 신선한 정신,

유약함을 물리치는 용기, 안이를 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.

때로는 이십의 청년보다 육십이 된 사람에게 청춘이 있다.

나이를 먹는다고 해서 우리가 늙는 것은 아니다

이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다.

 

세월은 우리의 주름살을 늘게 하지만

열정을 가진 마음을 시들게 하지는 못한다.

고뇌, 공포, 실망 때문에 기력이 땅으로 들어갈 때

비로소 마음이 시들어 버리는 것이다.

 

육십 세이든 십육 세이든 모든 사람의 가슴 속에는

놀라움에 끌리는 마음,

젖먹이와 같은 미지에 대한 끝없는 탐구심,

삶에서 환희를 얻고자 하는 열망이 있는 법이다.

그대와 나의 가슴 속에는

남에게 잘 보이지 않는 그 무엇이 간직되어 있다.

아름다움, 희망, 용기, 영원의 세계에서 오는 힘,

이 모든 것을 간직하고 있는 한

언제까지나 그대는 젊음을 유지할 것이다.

 

영감이 끓어져

정신이 냉소라는 눈에 파묻히고, 비탄이란 얼음에 갇힌 사람은

비록 나이가 이십 세라 할지라도 이미 늙은이와 다름없다.

그러나 머리를 드높여 희망이란 파도를 탈 수 있는 한

그대는 팔십 세일지라도 청춘의 소유자일 것이다.

 

 

* 이 시는 사무엘 울만이 78세 때에 썼으며, 맥아더 장군의 사무실에 걸려있었다고 해서 더욱 많이 알려졌다고 한다.

 

* 詩 感賞 노트 = 사무엘 울만(1840-1924 독일계 미국인 사업가,시인)이 “청춘”을 지은 것은 78세 때라고 한다. 생전에 그의 작품을 담은 시집은 출간되지 못했고, 그의 죽음과 함께 시도 역사 속으로 사라졌다. 그런데 이 시는 의외의 인물을 통해서 세상에 알려지게 된다. 2차 세계대전 중 맥아더 장군의 책상 위 액자에 들어있던 이 시를 종군기자 파머가 취재 하여, 종전 후 1945년 리더스 다이제스트 12월호에 소개하였다. 후에 원작자가 사무엘 울만이라는 것이 밝혀지고, 그의 시집도 세상에 나오게 되었다. 이 시가 소개된 뒤에 많은 사람들이 잃고 감동을 받아 전 세계로 전파되었다. 맥아더는 이 시를 매일 암송할 만큼 좋아했다. 마쓰시타 그룹 창업자인 일본 재계의 거물 마쓰시다 오노스께(松下幸之介)는 70이 넘은 나이에 이 시를 잃고 감격하여 새로운 사업을 시작할 용기를 얻었다고 한다.
